We’re counting down to an exciting milestone: our first public library performance! On Wednesday, February 25 at 7pm, we’ll be at Des Plaines Public Library showing off some Sweet Science. This event is free and open to the public, and we’re so overjoyed to be able to partner with DPPL to provide this fun and educational entertainment for library patrons!
Sweet Science is a hands-on chemistry program built around a deceptively simple ingredient – sugar.
You might think of sugar as something you taste, something to bake with, or something to celebrate with. But in the laboratory (and in the kitchen), sugar is far more interesting than it first appears.
What happens when sugar dissolves?
What happens when it reorganizes itself?
What happens when heat changes it completely?
Our show will explore how the same ingredient can behave in dramatically different ways depending on temperature, concentration, and time. Families will see sugar transform from clear solution to crystalline structure, from smooth liquid to glassy snap toffee — and along the way, we’ll ask real scientific questions about materials, structure, and change.
We’ll have visible experiments, fun transformations, safety-conscious audience interaction, and some sweet results.
One of the most exciting parts of preparing this show has been building our rock candy progression displays. Watching crystals form over days — slowly, patiently, predictably — has been a reminder that science often rewards careful observation and time.
We’ve also been refining our toffee experiments, exploring how slight differences in temperature create noticeably different textures. Same ingredients with different structures and different outcome.
Sweet Science is designed to be inquiry-driven and age-flexible. Younger participants can focus on observation and sensory properties. Older students can dig deeper into particle motion, energy, and structural change. At every level, the emphasis is on asking good questions.
We’re looking forward to bringing this program into a space built for curiosity and community.
